Designer

What does the job involve? Creating detail drawings of stone buildings mainly from interpreting architects and structuralengineers drawings and visits to site. Working with CAD establishing how buildings fit together.
What kind of person would it suit? A detail conscious person with patience, self motivation and a good aptitude for detail, design and problem solving.
What are good subjects to do at school? A good basic education. Mathematics, Design and Technology and ICT.
What training will I need? CAD and preferably some hands-on masonry experience. CAD training is usually done in-house.
How much outdoor work is there? If working on restoration project, the majority of work is outdoors. If working on a new build project, outdoor work is limited with a small amount of site visits to take details and/or attend site meetings to review existing details.
How much computer work is there? If working on restoration project computer work is limited. New build projects involve 90 - 95% computer work.
What's the money like? Depending on experience and how proficient one becomes, one should expect to earn more than a Banker Mason. Salaries upwards of £30,000 p.a. plus benefits are not uncommon.
What could it lead? Could give a good grounding for contract supervision/project managment,production manager. Could also lead to drawing office manager, possibly higher technical roles.
